Don’t Bite the Messenger

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of reading this novella. To be honest, I’m a bit burnt out on vampires and I was hesitant to read it not because I’d heard anything bad, but because I wasn’t sure I could handle more vampires.

I was wrong.

The vampires in this novella are scary. They are chilling and cold, and I don’t even trust the hero 100%. Most importantly, these vampires truly felt inhuman. I appreciated that.

dont-bite-the-messenger1Don’t Bite the Messenger was a unique read for me. I have never been anywhere near Alaska, though I’d like to someday, so the setting was as alien and foreign to me as Mars. Yet, Regan Summers was able to paint the perfect setting in my mind. I felt as desolate as the landscape, while also being in awe. I could really feel for the characters as they worked this dangerous delivery job. The fact that Sydney has to keep dying her hair to keep her identity a secret was a nice touch.

Regan Summers is also an excellent writer, so that served as the icing on the cake!

I haven’t had a chance to read any of her other stories, but I definitely will in the future.

Happy Anniversary!

Today marks the 75th anniversary of not just Superman/Clark Kent, but also Lois Lane. This duo has captivated audiences for decades. Talk about a power couple!

It’s no secret that Clark and Lois are my favorite couple in comic book mythos. There’s something magical about them that draws me in throughout every incarnation. To me, they aren’t just a couple. I love them as individuals. A lot of that has to do with Lois Lane.

What’s not to love about Lois? I hesitate to say that she is a “strong female character” because she means much more to me, both as a fan and as a writer. Lois Lane is cool and confident when she needs to be, and vulnerable when she wishes she wasn’t. I like to think Lois represents humanity, the fantastic and the flawed, and how you don’t need to be a superhero to make positive changes in the world. You just have to be the best person you can be.

Isn’t that what we try to do?

So Happy Anniversary, Superman and Lois! Here’s to many more!

Thoughts on Banshee Charmer

Okay, so, I am really horrible at reviews. Therefore, this is NOT a review, though in its heart of hearts it wishes to be.

Several months ago I finally had a chance to read Banshee Charmer by Tiffany Allee. I’m an urban fantasy fan and love a good paranormal romance when I see one. The problem is the urban fantasy market is so saturated right now. It’s hard to find a story that really stands out with its own unique flare.banshee charmer

When drew me to Banshee Charmer was the use of a lesser utilized supernatural character, a banshee. Don’t get me wrong. I have a soft spot for shape-shifters and werewolves, and I can even be convinced by a hot-looking vampire or two. (Short-lived vampire!Dean Winchester, I’m looking at you.) But when I read a paranormal or urban fantasy these days, I want to read about mythology characters who are different.

Tiffany Allee accomplished that by making her lead half-banshee.

I’m not going to go into a breakdown of the entire premise, but the plot deals with a cop case for the department who the lead character, Mac, works for.  The case is complicated by the death of her partner and the appearance of a mysterious man who isn’t what he seems. This is a plot that works and has been used before. It’s Tiffany Allee’s voice that caught me.

The story ended up being fun with both drama and comedy, which is what I look for in a story. My one complaint was that the story felt like it could be longer, but given I went into this knowing it was a novella, I can’t hold that against it. Plus, when I want something to be longer, I consider that a compliment.

In summary, I was glad I made the purchase and I will be reading more in the future. I encourage everyone who likes these genres to go check it out!
